A new Russian idea-a unifying system of values, ideals, and rules embraced by all-is necessary for Russia’s survival, believes Igor Chubais, author of the controversial book ‘From the Russian Idea to a New Idea for Russia’. Yet in an interview in Moscow with journalist Petra Prochazkova, Chubais expressed deep skepticism about President Boris Yeltsin’s method of formulating a new ‘national idea,’ describing it as too removed from the ideas and opinions of the general public.
