The year was most notable for President Askar Akaev’s announcement that he will not seek re-election in 2005 when his term expires, a decision that reverberated throughout the Kyrgyz Republic. The killing of unarmed protestors and a shrinking economy were just two of many factors that turned citizens against the regime and started the wheels of change turning.
