Bulgaria: Sofia’s Water Crisis

NATURE AND NEGLIGENCE have combined to create a devastating water crisis in Bulgaria’s capital city of Sofia. Unusually low rainfall over the past few years has led to a severe water shortage that has worsened because the water supply infrastructure is in such disrepair. Most of the city center’s water system was built between 1905 and 1911 – a time when Sofia could rightfully claim to be a developed city by Balkan standards – and little has been done to update or maintain it in the decades since.
