CENTRAL/EASTERN EUROPE: Airliner Gathering Speed-Without a Pilot

Life in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe is becoming increasingly similar to that in the advanced and wealthy West. The question, as Zbigniew Brzezinski, former U.S. national-security adviser, told Steve Kettle, is whether governments and societies are willing to reject the stability and security of the communist past and accept a version of democracy that falls short of their often quasi-Utopian illusions of democratic society.
