Ethno-Nationalism: Slurs, Socialism, and ‘Civilization’

THESE MAXIMS, RECORDED TOWARD THE end of World War II, illustrate how numbingly familiar stereotypes can be, even across state borders and in different languages. Slurs disparage what are seen as national, ethnic, or racial peculiarities, but they are not themselves peculiar to any group. Many Eastern slurs are little different from those in Western Europe, and some even originated there.
