The future of Russia’s military machine will certainly be influenced by the dismissal of Defense Minister Pavel Grachev, his successor, Colonel-General gor Rodionov, and the political ascent of Aleksandr Lebed, long a leading opponent of Grachev’s policies. While debate over military reform has become increasingly politicized, the rank and file remain largely apolitical and loyal to the president – decreasing the likelihood that a military putsch could be used to seize political power.
