After his strong showing in the first round of the Russian presidential election, Aleksandr Lebed was feted by Yeltsin and his entourage. The president even hinted that the retired general was his chosen successor. Now, however, Lebed is jostling for position with political heavyweights such as Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and Chief of Staff Anatolii Chubais.
