After almost 50 years of official silence and repression, in the late 1980s the stories of Lithuanians exiled to Siberia in 1941-1953 finally began to be told. As in the other Baltic republics, the grim tales jarred the national consciousness and accelerated the drive toward independence from the Soviet Union.
